Epirus Breathtaking Terroirs

JIMA philosophy is to craft unique wines which reflect Epirus breathtaking terroirs. Family manages vineyards in three disparate areas, from the southernmost edge of Epirus up to the northern borders. Three important rivers influence these terroirs, Arachthos Estuary the Ambracian Gulf vineyard, Kalamas the Sakelariko vineyards (wine villages of Zitsa municipality) and Aoös the Konitsa vineyard. The latitude expands from 39 to 40 and the altitude from sea level to 600m.

Ambracian Gulf, Kalomodia village

Altitude: Sea Level
Latitude: 39o05N

Ambracian gulf created two million years ago, due to intense tectonic activity. During the first phase, Arachthos River deposited into the basin rocks and other matter from Pindus Mountain range. Later, Ionian Sea invaded, and the land was covered by sea for a long period.

Vineyards nearby to Kalomodia village have dense grey-blue clay with high level of lime. Clay produces powerful wines, but still with finesse. The climate is mediterranean with warm and dry summers. The proximity to the Ionian Sea and Arachthos estuary benefits vines with refreshing mid-day breezes. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Vertzami (black) are cultivated in these vineyards.

Wine villages of Zitsa Municipality

Altitude: 350-700m
Latitude: 39o45N

This area has long tradition to vine growing and there exist a lot of old vines. The soil is rich in metamorphic rocks and the most common tasting note associated with metamorphic/schist soils is minerallity.

The climate can be described as continental. However, the vineyards at Sakelariko village mature first as the Kalamas valley brings well inland warmer air from the west coast. Debina (white) and Vlahiko (black) are the most important indigenous varieties.

Konitsa vineyard

Altitude: 450-600m
Latitude: 40o05N

This vineyard is placed in the northernmost part of Epirus, close to Albania borders, only a few minutes walk from the center of Konitsa town, at “Anagnos School” grange. The environment looks Alpine, cold air descents from the snow capped mountains. The inclined vineyard offers a unique view to Aoös gorge and plateau. Gewurztraminer, Debina (White), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Vlahiko (Black), Bekari (Black) and Merlot are the varieties of this vineyard.
